A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around a central courtyard. The historic quarter of Moroccan cities is called the old medina and is exclusively made up of this type of building. One of these medinas is the medina of Tetouan. It is, together with Fes, the best preserved medina in Morocco. Walking along its small alleyways you feel transported to the Middle Ages: there are no cars to be seen as the streets are too narrow for them, craftsmen labor in tiny workshops very much like they have been doing for centuries. When modernity came, Moroccans lost all interest in these houses. People moved out of the medina into European-style apartment blocks and, little by little, these small palaces were forgotten. Recently though, first in Marrakech, then in other cities like Fes, Asilah, Chefchaouen or Tangier, many people started to become interested in this forgotten architectural heritage. Tetouan’s medina has been the last one to be re-discovered and, thanks to this, there are still great opportunities in the market at very interesting prices.
